Lovely clean and well-appointed accommodation. Lovely old house with excellent facilities and comfortable room. Unfortunately, I only stayed one night; I would have loved to stay longer.

Veilige, skoon, praktiese huisie, met privaatheid en alles wat ons benodig het. Ons het die oornagverblyf baie geniet! Ons is met vriendelikheid en warmte verwelkom. Ons "huisie" was baie privaat, en daar was alles wat ons nodig gehad het. Skoon en netjies, baie veilig, en op 'n pragtige kleinhoewe op die rand van die dorpie. Sal definitief weer terugkeer.

Pragtige omgewing en ligging, maar benodig onderhoud. Pragtige area en ligging. Onderhoud het agterweë gebly, stortkop buite werking en bed is hol en tot niet. Kon nie daaroor geslaap kry nie.

Decent one night stay. The place was okay for a one night stay. We got upgraded, which was amazing. The shower head could be attended to. The drive towards the gate could be better. The gravel could be attended to. Other than that, it was a really decent place.

Pleasant. The rondawel was basic but clean and had all that was needed - except possibly a toaster. Lovely hot water.

Worst host experience ever. This was the worst self-catering experience at a guesthouse booked via the website. When we arrived at Mountain Charcoal, there was no one there. The gate was locked and no one answered the bell. After a number of phone calls and SMSs, our host referred us to a WhatsApp message he had sent the day before. As we had been travelling in isolated places with little or no internet connection, we had not seen any messages. In Lady Grey, we did have internet access and were able to see the WhatsApp message. The message didn't help at all. One was a video of a cottage with the number 4 on the door and the other was a hardly audible message saying that Danie would not be there, but his manageress might or might not be there to assist, so he would send us all the details. There were no details in the WhatsApp message. Another WhatsApp conversation revealed that there was a key safe with a combination to get the gate remote and the cottage key, which was for cottage #4. We drove in and spent the next 20 minutes searching for cottage #4. Another phone call confirmed that it was right at the back. We had to use brute force to open the security gate. No one contacted us after our arrival to confirm that we were OK. The crockery provided was disappointing. We got a WhatsApp message the next morning at 08:48, when we had already left the cottage: “Morning. Are you ok? I realised this morning that for the 1st time in our history you were the only guests on this side. The white house below had some guests – it's all kind of a pool under Anelle. You can stay late and even stay 1x night – no charge. Drive safe! Keys just in lockbox again please.” What more can I say!

I am sorry you feel this way - the messages sent to you were sent well in advance, in fact a day in advance. Yes, for the first time ever, you were the only guest for the night - but we were at the safest guest house in town. Every guest receives the same protocol and people are normally happy, so it's disappointing to read this.

Disappointing. I arrived tired after a long journey and there was no one to meet or greet me. When I eventually got hold of the owner, he was in Cape Town. He did try to help me by booking me into the Purple Pepper, but that was just a definite no. There were drinkers in the pub starting to make a noise, and the accommodation was a stone's throw away from the pub. I ended up sleeping comfortably in a tiny room, which was the verandah that had been closed in. I was glad I was travelling alone, as the toilet and the shower were part of the room. There would have been no privacy if I had a travelling companion. I went back to the venue, as the lady helping was awake and said I could come. All in all, the room was okay, but I just felt like no one knew I was coming, yet I had booked and paid in full many months ago and had received confirmation from the website. I cancelled my return booking and am hoping for a partial refund.

Hi. It's a pity what happened here and we apologise again. An elderly lady was looking after the place for us and she was exhausted after cleanup work done after our property was hit by floods and missed your call. We appointed someone full-time last week after further renovations done to the house by us over the last 10 days and expanded the service delivery. We will refund you your one night's stay.
