Abysmal rooms and stay dangerous to your health. Beautiful river front.
Written on behalf of my partner who made the booking:
Upon arrival, we had to wait 20+ minutes for someone to open the gate for us. The number posted on the gate went unanswered, and we had to phone the website to get hold of someone to open the gate. Eventually, Karen showed up and explained that none of the workers were answering their phones, and she had to drive to open for us.
I had to use the restroom and was shown to the main reception restroom. Upon entering, it was clearly dilapidated and not well kept. I saw a proper-sized spider sitting on top of the toilet’s water tank and another lower down, dead in a cobweb, along with a few daddy longlegs. As we were in nature, I could understand that a few spiders would be present here and there. When leaving the restroom, I informed my partner to rather not enter, as he really dislikes spiders. Karen heard this and brushed it off as something minor.
We were then taken to our cottage. First impressions were of a rustic, cozy place—until we entered. The place was filthy, with cobwebs everywhere. We also found a dirty cup with some old coffee still in it. I had to wash all the plates before use, as everything was covered with dust and cobwebs. The courtesy coffee advertised is also a myth, as it was so old in the container that it had formed a solid block. Luckily, we brought our own.
The gas bottle for the gas stove had just enough gas to boil the kettle three times. If we had to use it more, we wouldn’t have had enough gas. As we sat down to eat our dinner, we realized how filthy the couch was. The Openserve box to watch TV was not on, so I went to check if it was plugged in—only to find more cobwebs, dust, and filth behind the TV. Needless to say, there also wasn’t a remote to operate the TV, and the Openserve box didn’t even have a power cord.
The bathroom sink was also extremely filthy, with dust everywhere. We even found some old hair on the sink. We were a bit nervous going to bed as we didn’t know if the sheets would at least be clean. Pulling the curtains in the room revealed more filth and stains. Lying in bed was another terrifying experience. You’re not sure from which direction the spiders and bugs will be coming, as there is dust and cobwebs all over the roof.
On top of that, the electrical work leading to the roof fan and light was completely exposed, and I think my son could have done a better job connecting the wires. The fan was so filthy that debris fell off when it was switched on. As my partner is a kind-hearted soul, he didn’t want to make a fuss the next morning.
We went fishing for the day, and that is the only positive I can give this place—the view of the river is beautiful. Later that afternoon, I again had to use the restroom and entered the same one as the night before. Lo and behold, the dead spider in the cobweb was still waiting for me, meaning the restroom had not been cleaned at all.
We stayed there for two nights at a ridiculous price for the filth we had to endure, with nothing to justify that price. When we returned home, I found a strange-looking rash on my stomach the next morning, along with a growing headache and nausea. I consulted my doctor and was diagnosed with a fungal infection that had probably entered my bloodstream, causing the severe onset of symptoms. After showing him the pictures I took of the filth we stayed in, he wholeheartedly agreed that this was where I contracted the infection.
More worrying is that if an elderly person, immunocompromised person, or child were to get such an infection, it could be fatal to them. This place should be removed from all booking agencies, and a health inspector should definitely inspect the premises before they are allowed to continue doing business.
It is the first place I have ever been too scared to unpack our suitcase—we kept it zipped closed as we were not sure what would crawl into our clothes if we left it open or packed into the closet. Nature is one thing, but pure disgusting neglect and filth is a completely different story!
I have taken pictures as well if there should be any follow-up requests or disputes. At the price they are asking per night, they can at least afford some cleaning materials.
