Description

Museum Africa, situated in the Newtown Cultural Precinct of Johannesburg, offers a historical look into the heart and soul of the inner city. Visitors can walk into a 1950s shebeen or hostel room of concrete bunks, browse traditional as well as fine art, and discover fascinating aspects of South Africa's history.

Permanent displays showcase the geological, social, political, and economic history of Johannesburg, presenting an animated memorial to key phases of the city’s past. The museum showcases artefacts, paintings, photographs, musical instruments, and archaeological items that capture issues like the Rivonia Treason Trial and the social effects of the gold mines.

Museum Africa has a small coffee shop on site. There are also several restaurants and fast food outlets in the Newtown Cultural Precinct.
